english51The programs of Youth, Migrants, and Diversity of the Costa Rican Lutheran Church invite young leaders from the communities to participate this weekend in the workshop “sexual health”. This camp was held at Manu Center Lodge.

The overall objective of the workshop was to facilitate reflection and to develop a better understanding of all aspects of sexual health, both personal and interpersonal. The workshop emphasized the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, by asserting the need for responsible sexual practices.

Thirty-two youth participated in this event and represented many communities of faith. They shared their enthusiasm, ideas, and experiences, which contributed to a very educational and engaging workshop. The young men and women presented on the following themes: sexuality, gender, sexual orientation, prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, decision making, and understanding and accepting the body.

english52Albin Matarrita, a youth attending this program for the first time had this to say about the youth camp:

“It was an interesting experience and an opportunity to share with other youth leaders in our communities and to work together with them. It is very important to share experiences, ideas, and fun times. Although the weather was rainy, we could continue with the planned activities. Talking about the issues of sexual health has helped us understand the importance of healthy sexuality for ourselves and for women.”

An important part of this type of education camp is to motivate the youth to acquire knowledge which they can then take back to their communities and share with their others. In this way they become facilitators and continue to grow as leaders.

ILCO has been seeking ways to create spaces to share with people in order to promote and share Christian values. The youth training camps at Manu is one of the first steps towards youth training in spirituality, social management, and the Good News.
