The Costa Rican Lutheran Church celebrates with great joy, that Same-sex marriage became legal on May 26, 2020.
Costa Rica was the first nation in Central America to recognize and perform same-sex marriages, and although the date did not have the expected celebrations due to the covid-19 pandemic, but in our church we celebrate this historic moment that guarantees respect for Human Rights.
The Church must be a space for celebration and encounter with the diversity of life, where the values of respect and solidarity become real. Christians must emphasize the preaching of the unconditional love, grace and mercy of God, overcoming the condemnation and exclusion that for centuries has been imposed on minorities.
Pastor Gilberto Quesada president of the church refers to the importance of supporting this law:
"Supporting and accompanying the approval process of this law means being on the side of excluded minorities, since this is a matter of Human Rights and not of textual interpretations of the Bible and the Church addresses these issues under pastoral action. Accompanying in the pastoral area when the person is reduced to pain, loneliness and discrimination is what today leads us to participate in these life projects and from the teachings of Christ we open spaces that promote dignity and a full life for all the people"
Next, we invite you to watch the video (spanish) where Pastor Gilberto Quesada emphasizes that the Church has its doors open and once, they have celebrated civil marriage, the ILCO is in the greatest disposition to perform the blessing of their marriage.
It should be noted that the Church has historically walked with this LGBTI struggle and has been a church that sign under the project that reached the National Assembly and today we are very happy about this great event. This is the struggle of all the Costa Rican people.
We take this opportunity to congratulate the activist and lawyer Marco Castillo Rojas, who married his partner, Rodrigo Campos, in the Family Court for the district of Desamparados, in the presence of their witnesses and some media.
