In celebration of a 10-year relationship, Bishop Melvin Jiménez represented the Lutheran of Church of Costa Rica during the Southwest Texas synod’s assembly in late May.
Bishop Jiménez preached at the synod’s opening worship service May 31, with the Rev. Ray Tiemann, bishop of the Southwest Texas synod, presiding. Jiménez challenged those present to place compassion toward others as center in the life of congregations – a calling we receive from both the prophets and Jesus.

The worship service also included a video about ILCO and Manu Center, which was aimed to energize congregations to collaborate economically and visit as part of the companion relationship. More than 600 people participated.

Through various sessions, Jimenez shared about ILCO and its ministry with youth at Manu Center and promoted collaboration between the two churches.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the companion synod relationship, the offering received at the May 31 assembly worship service was designated for youth leadership development in the Lutheran Church of Costa Rica, including the renovation and expansion of the Manu Center. As of June 13, the assembly totals $89,343.30, including $9,507 received from the sale of quilts made for the assembly, $500.50 from the offering boxes on the assembly tables, and $85 from the sale of Costa Rica artwork.
